Project

The loan has been provided to Solar Park Kvosted ApS for the construction and operation of a 50 MW/200 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at an existing 100 MWp solar PV park in Denmark. The project will enable the time‑shifting of renewable energy, meaning storing excess solar power when production is high and releasing it back to the grid when demand increases. It will also support grid balancing and participation in ancillary services markets, where grid operators procure services that help maintain power system stability. The loan supports Denmark’s transition to clean energy and is eligible under the InvestEU Clean Energy Transition Framework. Construction began in November 2025, and operations are expected to be running by April 2026. The total project cost is EUR 97.4 million.

Fulfilment of NIB's mandate

The project increases Denmark’s renewable energy storage and generation capacity, supporting national climate targets and energy security. The BESS addition allows more efficient use of solar power, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and enabling participation in balancing markets. The investment supports the diversification of Denmark’s energy mix and mitigates the challenges of intermittent renewable generation. The project is expected to result in significant CO₂ reductions.

Impact indicators related to the loan:

  • CAPEX in EUR million
  • PV-BESS annual revenue from time shifting 2026–2029 in EUR million
  • BESS grid arbitrage annual revenue 2026–2029 in EUR million

Sustainability summary

The project complies with relevant national permitting and environmental requirements. Measures are in place to minimise environmental impacts, including flood risk mitigation and responsible battery end-of-life management in line with EU regulations.
