Project
Rīgas Satiksme continues to modernise its public transport system by expanding trolleybus electrification. Several routes currently operate beyond existing catenary lines, requiring the use of diesel engines. The new investment will extend the catenary network, reducing diesel use and enabling fully electric operations.
The project also includes upgrades to traction substations and power supply systems, the reconstruction of catenary infrastructure on key routes, and the construction of new power lines.
The total investment is estimated at EUR 20 million.
Fulfilment of NIB's mandate
Productivity and environment
The programme upgrades existing traction power and catenary systems to improve reliability. Upgraded substation, and renewed catenary infrastructure will help reduce outages, voltage drops, and delays across a network serving around 40 million trips annually. The project also includes extending the catenary network to reduce the use of diesel range extenders. Enhanced overhead systems and switchgear will further improve safety for passengers, road users, and maintenance crews.
Environment
By replacing diesel-powered segments with fully electric operations, the project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create a more energy-efficient, reliable transport system.
Impact indicators related to the loan:
Environment and productivity
- Added new catenary to the infrastructure (in kms)
- Additional routes are fully electrified
Sustainability summary
Investment programme will enable full electrification on additional routes, reducing reliance on diesel and improving network reliability and efficiency.
