Project
The uncommitted credit facility of up to EUR 10 million will support the renewal of Vilnius’ street lighting infrastructure during 2025–2027 through investments carried out by Miesto Gijos AB’s subsidiary Vilniaus Apšvietimas UAB.
The project is part of a wider EUR 20 million infrastructure modernisation programme. It will replace ageing street poles across the city, most of which were installed in the mid-1970s. The poles are an essential part of the city’s infrastructure, supporting street lighting and other urban equipment.
Vilniaus Apšvietimas is the capital’s primary provider of urban lighting infrastructure and powers the city’s entire public lighting network with renewable energy. As part of a broader technological upgrade, the company has already integrated 478 EV charging stations into lighting poles and is modernising outdated equipment to reduce operational and safety risks. Miesto Gijos AB is 100% owned by the Vilnius City Municipality.
Fulfilment of NIB’s mission
Productivity
The existing poles are reaching the end of their technical life and form an essential part of Vilnius’ urban infrastructure. Their renewal will improve the reliability of the city’s street lighting infrastructure, reduce maintenance needs and enhance the efficiency and safety of daily operations.
Environmental
The new poles are designed with integrated functionality, allowing different types of urban equipment to be installed on the same structures. This reduces the overall number of poles required and lowers the project’s environmental footprint. Their modular design and long service life also support more resource-efficient maintenance and replacement.

Sustainability summary
The project replaces ageing poles with new structures designed for an estimated service life of 30 years. Their modular construction allows damaged structures to be replaced without removing their foundations, reducing the need for more extensive replacement works. The poles also include anticorrosion protection suited for winter conditions and road salt. The dismantled poles will be handed over to Vilniaus viešasis transportas for recycling as scrap metal.
By modernising Vilnius’ street lighting infrastructure, the project will improve its long-term reliability while reducing environmental impact through more durable, integrated and resource-efficient solutions.
