NIB has provided the loan to Metrosert AS to finance investments in the new Drone Technology Unit within the Applied Research Centre in Tallinn, Estonia.
The Drone Technology Unit will include several laboratories supporting development and life cycle of unmanned vehicles. It is designed to explore concepts in unmanned aviation, communications and navigation, and flight physics. The financing will be used for the equipment the unit requires.
The total costs of establishing the Drone Technology Unit between 2025 and 2027 will be EUR 17.4 million. The total investments for the whole Applied Research Centre will be EUR 42.9 million.
Fulfilment of NIB's mandate
Productivity:
In response to the growing demand for testing drones designed for military use, the investment is part of a broader government-backed initiative to enhance Estonia’s national R&D capacity. While the main goal of the proposed facility is to test drones primarily for military use, it could in the future also be adapted for evaluating drones for commercial purposes or even for testing technologies unrelated to drones.
As one of the most comprehensive research and development facilities for drone technologies in the Baltic region, the facility will provide a platform for companies in the Nordic-Baltic region to accelerate product development and potentially reduce associated costs.
Environment:
The facility is not expected to have any significant impact on the environment.
