Project
The loan has been provided for financing the building of Kemira’s new biomaterials production facility in Finland. Kemira and International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF) have joined forces to produce renewable biobased products on a commercial scale. Kemira’s role in the collaboration is to co-develop and commercialise a range of new biobased and biodegradable products across Kemira’s key product lines.
The total investment cost is approximately EUR 130 million. The project started in March 2025. Following construction and ramp-up period, commercial production is expected to start in 2 to 3 years.
Fulfilment of NIB's mandate
Productivity:
Kemira and IFF are jointly investing in a commercial-scale plant in Finland to produce bio-based alpha-glucans. The project combines IFF’s technology with Kemira’s expertise in developing and commercialising bio-based products.
Ex-post impact indicators productivity:
- Capex (Kemira’s share)
- Annual production
Environment:
The project is bio-based and supports Kemira’s defossilisation objectives.
While an initial carbon footprint comparison has been conducted, current data is insufficient to fully assess environmental impacts or the extent of fossil substitution.
Ex-post impact indicators environment:
- Final Life Cycle Assessments of the three Alpha-Glucan applications
- Annual volume of Alpha-Glucans produced
